The new BMW X2 – Launch  DRIVE

The luxury compact sport utility vehicles segment is new, and one that car makers have seen to be growing, these are for people that want a higher ride height, the luxury and tech of SUVs in smaller practical cars, even though they live in urban areas. Most premium car makers have representation in this segment; BMW has recently thrown its hat in the mix by introducing the all new BMW X2.

This additional X model is available is S drive(petrol derivatives 1.8i&2.0i) and X Drive(2.0D).  At the launch of the new model 2 derivatives were availed to us for sampling, a top of the range diesel and the middle of the range 2.0i petrol.

In terms of looks, it is literally unmissable, it has presence thanks to several key aesthetic highlights, the signature BMW kidney grille is slight bigger and on further inspection in trapezoidal form, large air intakes, muscular lines on the bonnet and higher mounted fog lights are easy notable. LED headlights & daytime running lights are a standard offer on the new X model, full LED is available as an option. The side profile is highlighted by bigger side view mirrors, nicely detailed squared off wheel arches finished in grey cladding(M Sport X), detailed side skirts and a bolder higher placed shoulder line. This is all finished by spectacularly placed BMW badge on the Hofmeister kink high up on the C pillar.  A decent selection alloys from 17” which are standard to an impressive optional 20”s are on offer to add some street cred, not that’s any is missing.  The rear end benefits from a roof spoiler, L shaped LED taillights, twin exhaust outlets , and the rear bumper is detailed according specific design cues.

The X2 has a Basic, M Sport and the M Sport X derivatives one can specify their model with. I personally recommend the M Sport X , it’s the business, at launch most units rolled on 19” alloys, they look stunning . In addition, M sport and M sport X models come standard with M Suspension which 10mm lower adding to a sportier stance. The new X model comes with some stunning new colours , Galvanic gold,  Sunset Orange and Misano Blue are quite outstanding and enhance the car’s looks.

The interior is indicative of what we have come to expect from the German brand, simple yet elegantly finished with detailed trimmings, like the contrast stitching on the dash and centre console, the contract stitching is extended to the seats as well, a perforated leather steering  and a black panel tech that is relatively refreshing. The seats have 2 options, full dakota leather or the funky cloth and Alcantara mix. While BMWs tend to suffer with dated interior feel, in the X2 a sense of refreshment is evident. The spacious and airy, boot space is ample thanks to 470litres.

It is key to note BMW will not offer the Basic Model to the South African market, M Sport and M Sport X will be the only 2 packages available.

The X2 is powered by 2 engines derivatives at the moment, an additional entry level 3cylinder petrol will be introduced later in the year. The 4 cylinder turbo charged petrol is rated at 141kw @5000Rpms-6000Rpms, and 280nm of torque available from a low 1350Rpms all the way to 4500Rpms, this is transferred through the rear wheels and mated is to a 7 speed dual clutch transmission. The drive is involving and entertaining, the seating position is perfect to allow some dynamic driving, especially if you sit nice and low. The petrol is surprising responsive and quite fun to drive, driving it back to back with the diesel ,I found it more rewarding  even though the oil burner has 120nm torque advantage. Don’t get me wrong it is just as entertaining, since these are closely matched on power the petrol felt faster as it could rev quite higher. In the twisty bits of Franschoek pass in Cape Town, the X2 proved its BMW X credentials very well, its road holing qualities are quite remarkable. It responded quite well to immediate direction change despite its ground clearance of 182mm, thanks to solid set up. While the suspension is brilliant for performance driving it still offers civilised comfort. The diesel has an impressive kick low down, this generates an impressive 140kw @4000Rpms with 400nm of torque availed at 1750Rpms to 2500Rpms. It surges forward so sweetly and without much effort.

The X2 is available with a whole host of pleasant luxury drippings to make your experience that much better, a powered tail gate is now standard,  so is satellite navigation.  On the safety aspect it has been specified to keep well and healthy with an impressive list of safety gizmos.

The standard list of features is generous and comprehensive, I would recommend you tick exclusive package option, it has all the cool goodies like heated and powered front seats, Harman Kardon sound system and comfort access (R27 900). Or if you want seriousness, go for the Innovation packaged which includes head up display, navigation plus and driving assist(R29 900).

In conclusion, I fell in love with 1st pictures I saw of this car from international press briefs, it impressed me more seeing it in the metal, the drive sealed the deal.
